Supporting Every Learner at The Alexander Dawson School

At The Alexander Dawson School, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to thrive. Our robust Student Services program is designed to provide tailored support for students with diverse learning needs, ensuring that each child can reach their full potential. From academic interventions to social-emotional learning, our expertly-trained faculty work tirelessly to create an inclusive, supportive environment where every student can succeed.

Celebrating Neurodiversity

Dawson celebrates neurodiversity and recognizes that every student learns differently. Our student body reflects a wide range of learning styles, including children with diagnosed learning differences. Through individualized support plans, we ensure that all students have the tools and resources they need to excel.

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Support

When a student needs additional support, our referral process begins with an internal assessment by the Dean of Student Services. This may include classroom observations, work sample reviews, and referrals for neuropsychological evaluations or therapy services. Based on the data, our Learning Strategists collaborate with teachers and families to create customized academic interventions and accommodation plans.

Academic Support and Enrichment

Dawson’s Learning Support Team provides targeted assistance for students in first through eighth grades. Whether it’s one-on-one tutoring, small group sessions, or co-teaching in the classroom, our faculty use data-driven strategies to address individual needs. We also offer specialized programs like the Language Lab for reading and writing support and the Student Success Lab for middle schoolers focusing on executive functioning skills.

Social-Emotional Learning and Counseling

Our Student Services program includes a comprehensive school counseling initiative. With two full-time counselors on campus—one for Early Childhood and Lower School, and one for Middle School—students have access to one-on-one or small-group support. Counselors also lead classroom lessons on topics like empathy, resilience, and conflict resolution.

Adding to our supportive environment is Hope, our Goldendoodle comfort dog. Hope visits campus several times a week to provide comfort and care to students and staff alike.

What I Need (WIN) Time

Middle School students participate in “What I Need” (WIN) time, a flexible instructional period designed to address individual learning needs. Students are grouped based on data and receive targeted lessons in literacy and math, ensuring they stay on track with their academic goals.

A Commitment to Every Student

At Dawson, we’re committed to providing a well-rounded education that meets the needs of every learner. Our Student Services program is just one way we ensure that all students feel supported, valued, and empowered to succeed.
